By 1570, small pox and various European diseases reduced the population of the island from 40,000 down to 300.
By 1600, the island was abandoned.

One of the most interesting national attractions on Cozumel is a freshwater lake just south of San Miguel de Cozumel. This lake is cut off from the sea and is a popular spot thanks to the crystal-clear water and the tropical fish.
